MP is mistaken if he or she thinks I "hate" what the church teaches, but I do think that that an entirely celibate and entirely male tradition of thinking about these issues starts from a very narrow base of experience, too narrow to develop an adequate theology of marriage and sexuality. On these matters, a moral theology worthy of the name needs to be tested against life as it is lived out by married Christians. Until those of us who are married, especially those of us who have born and raised families, have had a real chance to contribute our insights and wisdom to the discussion, the church's teaching will be marred by an abstract and untested perspective.
I think MP also mischaracterizes the Obama administration's efforts, which are designed not to stifle but to ensure the rights of conscience for individuals. The bishops have failed to persuade their own flock that contraception is always evil. I don't believe they are courageous at all. If they were, they would be brave enough to reopen the question of why their interpretation of natural law -- which is supposed to be self-evident to anyone of good will -- has convinced so few.

It seems that prophets are viewed in a variety of ways depending where we are on our spiritual journey. I would imagine that Saint Theresa of Avila, John of the Cross and St. Catherine of Sienna would all have been thought of as troubling to the magisterium of their era. I find it difficult to see that the Second Vatican Council has come to any full blossoming. Under Benedict XVI’s leadership the spirit of the Council has faded almost completely since they do not seem to welcome input from theologians and spiritual authors.
We are all called on a variety of spiritual paths. I am delighted that MP has found one that is exciting. I find that my needs in liturgy and understanding of Jesus, the Christ, have changed over the years. That isn’t bad; it is just different than MP's.

Prophets? These theologians have brought so much damage to the faith. Fortunately, their influence is waning, and young adults are falling in love with Blessed John Paul II's beautiful and rich Theology of the Body and Benedict XVI's powerful christology and liturgiology, which is bringing about the full blossoming of the Second Vatican Council. A new era and a new springtime for the Church. So excited!!!

<p>"enforce their compliance"? You mean what the Obama Administration is attempting to do now to people of conscience, and what our bishops are courageously standing up against? While you have a right to hate what the Church teaches about marriage and sexuality, we have a right to love and treasure it.</p>
